We are very happy to offer a workshop with one of the most profound teachers in the field of yoga therapy today.

Doug has been offering trainings and workshops in the field of Yoga therapy for more than a decade and is known to bring his knowledge to his students in an understandable and helpful way.

Besides teaching internationally, Doug is a renowed professor at the Maryland University of Integrative Health in their Master’s Degree programme in Yoga Therapy.

Doug has degrees in philosophy from Georgetown and Fordham Universities in the United States, and taught philosophy at college level for several years. He also spent a total of 14 years in Siddha meditation ashrams worldwide.

Since Dougs first visit to Vienna in 2019 we have been closely working with him to offer Online Webinars during the past two years.

This workshop will take place in Vienna for „in-flesh“ participation, but is also also available for online live participation or as a recording.

Each day will be split in two sessions of 3 hours each with a lunch break in between. The workshop can be booked for full 3-days, single days or individual sessions.

Participants who book the full workshop will get an in-detail illustrated manual in addition to the slides (pdf) shown during the session. Participants who book a part of the workshop can purchase the manual on site for 20 EUR.

Lecture: How to relieve sciatic pain with principles of functional movement + taking these ideas into practice. focus on hip actions and openings. – 3 hours

Breath, Self-Mastery, and the Development of the Idea of the Chakras
Lecture: Concepts of the autonomic nervous system, role of hormones, chakras and significance to life “off the mat” + simple Pranayama practices, Yoga Nidra and Meditation. – 3 hours

Keys to the Shoulder Girdle: Opening the Wings of the Breath
Lecture and application in Asana – 3 hours

A River Runs Through Us: From Psoas to Neck
Asana practice with psoas releases, releases for the neck, eye movements and breath awareness. Focusing on the role of the Vagus nerve in relation to the breath. Closing with Pranayama, relaxation, and meditation. – 3 hours

Rediscovering Freedom: the Therapeutic Wisdom of Yoga with Doug Keller

A training-intensive for yoga teachers and inquiring students

‘Rediscovering Freedom’ seems like an apt theme to explore, particularly after the restrictions of the past couple of years. And this theme will have a practical, focused purpose for understanding therapeutic applications of yoga more deeply. Prior to preoccupations with ‘stretching’ and strengthening, and connections to ideas about fitness, the therapeutic value of yoga practice lies in explorations of freedom of movement within the body that we are given in the present moment, even when that freedom seems quite limited. The tools for exploration that the practice offers are the key.

This training includes ideas for working with physical limitations that are quite often linked to pain patterns, and are often the result of injury — and these ideas will be especially helpful for teachers working with students with such limitations. At the same time, the asana practices that we do as part of the weekend will be for the sake of a satisfying experience for those who already have experience with asana practice. The practices will be manageable, but also include a satisfying degree of challenge. Everyone is invited to participate in the practices to the level of their own comfort, and also to benefit from the learning being offered!

Session 1:
Rediscovering Freedom: Keys to Understanding Pain Syndromes — New Perspectives on the Therapeutic Wisdom of Yoga, and Connecting with the Core

This session starts with an introduction to themes for the training on rediscovering freedom: the role of joint play and the arthrokinetic reflex in pain syndromes and movement limitations, and what that means for a more insightful understanding of yoga practice. After this introduction, exploration — we’ll look at the 3-dimensional dynamics of the ‘Core’ in practice. The latter half of the session will be asana practice.

Session 2:
Dynamic Foundations: A New Perspective on the Feet — and Knee Health

It’s traditional to think of the ‘foundation’ of the body in the feet in terms of the ‘four corners’ of the foot. But this doesn’t really fit the anatomy of the feet in dynamic movement. We’ll introduce a more accurate and practical model for ‘grounding’ the feet in standing and in movement, and we’ll look at how this way of understanding the feet is more beneficial to the knees, particularly when we rediscover the freedom of contralateral movement that is vital to healthy movement. The session will include asana practice specific to the knees, as well as remedial exercises for the feet and knees that are a vital warm-up for asana practice!

Session 3:
Making Connections: Functional Lines of Movement that Provide the Key to a Deeper Understanding of Asana

Along with the myofascial lines described by Tom Myers that govern posture, the ‘functional lines’ that govern movement provide keys for understanding the value of asana practice — especially when it comes to rethinking more traditional instructions for asana that don’t really fit our anatomy. A practical focus for this session will be on the problem of sciatic pain, and how the principles of functional movement laid out in this session help to relieve problems of sciatica in yoga practice rather than cause them! The latter half of the session will take these ideas into practice, with special focus on hip actions and openings.

Session 4:
Breath, Self-Mastery, and the Development of the Idea of the Chakras

Yoga has, since its inception, been about self-mastery — from ideas about control over the mind and senses in the Upanishads, to subtler and deeper insights into self-mastery. And this has always been closely tied to ideas about the breath or Prana. In this session, we’ll explore this idea of self-mastery and the role of the breath, linking these ideas to modern concepts of the autonomic nervous system (and the role of hormones). Where the ideas of the chakras came from via tantra will be explored, and we’ll seek a deeper understanding of the significance of these ideas for our approach to life ‘off the mat.’ This evening discussion will lead to some simple pranayama practices, Yoga Nidra, and meditation.

Session 5:
Keys to the Shoulder Girdle: Opening the Wings of the Breath

The shoulder girdle includes three moving parts — collarbone, shoulder blade, and armbone (humerus). For healthy, pain-free movement of the shoulders, all three parts have to work together well.

We’ll look at the role of these three parts and their joints in shoulder aches and pains, and principles for warmup and action for all of them, with applications in asana. This will include a look at common form of shoulder aches and pains, and their causes — including and especially shoulder impingement and rotator cuff problems. Special attention will be given to the ‘wings’ of the shoulders — the shoulder blades.

There will be plenty of ‘light bulb’ moments for working better with your shoulders in yoga poses — and in life.

Session 6:
A River Runs Through Us: From Psoas to Neck

The session will start with practice, from psoas releases linked to the breath, to subtle releases for the neck, tied to eye movements and breath awareness. Context will be provided for these simple practices, especially focusing on the role of the Vagus Nerve in relation to the breath — as well as ‘blocks’ that arise from neck and shoulder use. These simple awareness practices will lead to some practice of asana — which will lead to pranayama, relaxation and meditation to finish the weekend.

Some very important support materials are provided with the training to ensure that you can take in the information and work with it even when the training itself is over.

An illustrated manual is provided for you with the training, which includes the teaching points of the training, illustrated and in detail, with space for you to take notes as we go along. This reduces your stress from worrying about taking extensive notes, so that you can be fully present to experience what is being covered in the training.

The slide presentations used in the lecture portions of the weekend, which follow the information in the manual, will also be available to you to download. You will be able to save them to your computer or tablet as high quality color documents for you to review whenever you wish.
